It is hosted by two Chiropractors who have a genuine interest in busting the myths and dogma that is perpetuated both consciously and unconsciously in the back pain industry.

One episode in particular that I like is titled “10 Things Everyone with Back Pain Should know”.

It is in interview with Profession Kieran O’Sullivan where he explains 10 different areas of back pain:

I’ll highlight the 10 things below and add my brief thoughts underneath. To go more in-depth I recommend you listen to the episode.

1 – 1.56Back Pain is scary but rarely dangerous.

For example in my career over the last 13 years I’ve only met two people who had backpain from a medically ‘serious’ problem – he defines what serious means.

2 – 6.06 Getting older is not a cause of lower back pain.

I’m happy they talked about this, because increasing age does not mean increasing pain.

3 – 14.23 – Pain is rarely Associated with Tissue damage.

I love this point because it links really well with the next one.

4 – 23.30 – Scans rarely show the cause of pain.

Scans show us structural changes in the back, but as the point 3 alludes to, pain is rarely associated with structural change, so focusing on scan results can lead us down the wrong path.

5 – 24.04 – Back pain with Exercise and movement doesn’t mean you are causing harm.

Yup, If you don’t exercise because of pain avoidance it can lead to weakness, fear and anxiety which, in turn, lead to more pain.

6 – 35.37 – Back Pain is not caused by poor posture.

This is a good point. People commonly ask me what is the best posture, and I have glibly being saying that it’s the next one you get into to…

7 – 41.02 – Back Pain is not caused by a weak core.

Although they don’t go into detail here this has been talked about by many researchers in the past but still people think they have to work on their core to get rid of back pain.

8 – 41.16 – Backs do no wear out with everyday bending and lifting.

I love the comparison between countries here…basically it’s not necessarily the job that gives you back pain, it’s the context in which you see your job.  For examples nurses in some countries have high levels of back pain.  Nurses in other countries, who do the same job, don’t.

9 – 52.39 – Pain Flare-ups do not mean your are damaging your spine.

I 100% agree.

10 – 60.26 – Injections, surgery and strong drugs aren’t usually a cure.

In the short term they might get you out of pain quicker but the end result is the same as not having them.

My thoughts:

Back pain is one of the biggest reasons for lost work days, disability and lost zest for life….and it doesn’t have to be.

Rob and Dave spend their days helping people with back pain as do I.

It’s scary, confusing and disempowering but as podcasts like this are showing, our current understanding of back pain is evolving and the future is getting brighter and brighter.
